Why can’t I play GTA Online with my friend?
Quick answer
On PC, check your versions first: if one of you is on GTAV Legacy and the other on GTAV Enhanced, you can’t meet. Rockstar keeps those players apart, so you both need the same version. The store doesn’t matter: Steam, Epic, the Rockstar Games Launcher and the Xbox app on PC can play together. PC players can’t play with console players.

Check your pair
No. Rockstar keeps GTAV Legacy and GTAV Enhanced players apart on PC. One of you needs to switch, so you’re both on the same version.
On PC, the store you bought from doesn’t matter. The version does.
Rockstar’s rules
A PC copy bought now comes with both versions. If your PC meets Enhanced’s requirements, the simplest fix is for both of you to play Enhanced. Rockstar doesn’t say, on the support pages we checked, whether different consoles can play together, so we leave that as Unknown.

Same version, but invites still fail on PC
If you see each other as offline and can’t invite, Rockstar’s first fix is your Presence Visibility:
- Open GTA Online.
- Open the Rockstar Games menu.
- Select the Settings gear.
- Select Game Settings.
- Under Presence Visibility, select Everyone.
Then invite again. If that doesn’t work, join through the Pause menu. You need to be in the same Crew:
- Open the Pause menu.
- Go to the Online tab.
- Click Join Crew Members.
On the Xbox app on PC
GTA Online can be unavailable if your Xbox privacy settings block multiplayer or cross-network play:
- Open the Xbox app on PC.
- Select Profile & settings, then Settings.
- Under Account, find Privacy Settings and select Manage.
- Select Xbox and Windows 10 devices Online Safety.
- Find “You can join multiplayer games”, select Allow, then Submit.
- Find “You can join cross-network play”, select Allow, then Submit.
- Presence Visibility
- Set to Everyone, then invite again (5 steps above)
